Our server didn't ask to give us more water. He was gone for awhile and didn't even check on us. We had to get another waiter to get our checks..

The service was very slow. The food was bland, especially the asparagus that featured horseradish, we found no horseradish nor horseradish flavor. The fried green tomatoes were good, but only 3 of them, as in 3 slices. The drinks from the bar were great, but had to ask the server 2 times for the menu and ended up getting the menu from the guests behind us that overheard our asking on 2 occasions.
Its a great venue, but we expected a better experience considering the prices.

Very cool subterranean atmosphere, like a speakeasy. The crowd was mixed, some families, lots of couples, and also some girl night out groups . Interesting menu choices and delicious.

It was a very romantic environment but it was very loud. I could hear conversations from every conversation around me.

Service was great. Hostess gave us the option of waiting or sitting at a table immediately with the understanding that we'd have to leave after an hour for a reserved party, which I appreciated. Good was delicious but maybe a tad salty. Waitress knew how the restaurant.com certificate worked. Nice ambience and location!

My wife and I went to Bess last summer, we really enjoyed your Sangria to the point that we invited 2 friends from Houston to come try it. Unfortunately when we tried to order it we were told that they no longer make it. To appease us they said they would make it even though it’s no longer on the menu. Great gesture but when the drinks came it was nowhere close to what it was before. The bartender did come to our table after he made the drinks, we did explain our displeasure of the drinks, he did apologized and told us that it wouldn't taste the same because the fruit needs time to blend. I just wish he would have told us before or just don't offer the drink if he knew that the taste would have not been up to par.

Didn't have a reservation for Sunday at 8pm but we were seated at a bar table with comfy cushions. Make a reservation just to be safe.

our waitress was so knowledgable about the items on the menu and could describe how they're made + name all the ingredients so we could make an informed decision. So many great items to choose!!!

Bess is an authentic bistro in the Stratford Arms building at 500 West Sixth Street, Austin's Old Pecan Street. Originally the Stratford Apartments built in 1918, the vintage building's old bank vault is Bess' kitchen, a treasury of great food, today. Where coins and currency were once counted out, carefully selected beers, wines and liquors are served from a stunning pewter bar custom-made in Montbazon.
An idea in the making for over 4 years, historic brick columns and arches, iron railings, and old timbers have been carefully preserved and complemented with solid pecan woodwork, custom tile, extraordinary etched glass, antique mirrors and artwork, to create a whimsically intimate setting for any occasion. The 6th Street entry to Bess is a canopied stairway to the Bess Experience, a unique blend of casual elegance, cheeky ease, and European flair mixed with good ol' Southern come'n get it.
The menu deliberately defies classification. Creole inspired Shrimp Bess beckons comfortably beside Croque Monsieur. Natural, organic and light offerings are right at home with old fashioned Mac & Cheese and Steak Frites. The menu's common thread is the passion of the chef.
