Restaurant Description
When Alice and Khalil Abu Nasr came to the USA in 1970, they saw the opportunity to introduce the people of Milwaukee to various Middle Eastern cuisines and cultures. In 1973 they created an informal culinary school titled the Arabian Bites Academy. It was a place where people could come together and learn the preparation of traditional Arabian dishes and discover the rich, cultural tapestry of the Arabian world. It was not long after the school began that delectable dishes created by Abu and Alice sparked the pallets of participants within Arabian Bites who eventually persuaded the couple to start their restaurant. The restaurant affectionately named Abu’s after the Nickname that Khalil used among his friends. The V symbol on Abu’s logo represents the last name of Khalil and Alice because Nasr means Victory. Abu’s restaurant was first opened in July 1977, on Green Bay Ave, and later was moved to its current, landmark location on Farwell Ave in 1979. Yet shortly after establishing the new location, the beloved Abu passed away in 1982. To this day Alice, (Mrs. Abu) has upheld the restaurant that the two began together many years ago. Alice and her family have strived to maintain the Arabian tradition of cuisine, hospitality and warmth through Abu’s restaurant. Since the beginning, Abu’s has received several awards locally each year for its authentic Middle Eastern cuisine. In addition, Abu’s was nationally ranked One of the top 10 Middle Eastern Restaurant in the country. Abu’s remains the Longest Existing Middle Eastern Restaurant in the Sate of Wisconsin, and for over 30 years, Abu’s has truly appreciated each of its customers’ and thanks them for sustaining Abu’s and Alice’s vision and the Abu Legacy.
