Restaurant Description
The Mad Hatter Saloon bar and restaurant resides in a tenement built in the 1920s, in a vibrant neighborhood that is always changing. Steps away from Broadway Alley, the only unpaved through street in Manhattan (where Barnum and Bailey kept their circus elephants back in the day), the Mad Hatter Saloon preserves and celebrates an impressive piece of New York City history behind its friendly bar. The beautiful cherrywood back bar and counter were handcarved with intricate details in the 1880s by craftsmen from the Knickerbocker Brewing Company. The brewery was formerly located on the upper east side and was owned by Jacob Ruppert, owner of Yankees from 1914-1939 and the man responsible for building Yankee Stadium. The bar was originally built for a hotel in the financial district and made its way up to 26th & 3rd 40 years ago after it was bought at auction by the previous owners. There are apparently only five Knickerbocker bars left in the city. We don't know where the other four are...but we're sure you'll be more than amazed with the Mad Hatter Saloon's bar and its tenders. However, these days, the only elephants you're likely to see are pink ones.
