The first time I walked into the Sand Crab Cafe back in 1989, I knew I'd own it someday. Life is funny like that sometimes. It took almost 22 years, but on the first day of Winter in 2010, the Sand Crab Cafe became The Original Sand Crab Tavern, and Captain Rick took the helm proof positive that sometimes a guy's dream really does become reality. Perfected over many years of trial and error, my New Orleans style BBQ shrimp can be enjoyed by you right here. What luck. It's called Voodoo Shrimp and, like the original, these are BIG, heads on, peel and eat. Give them a try. I think you'll like 'em.

Rated 1 out of 5 by I orderes the jambalaya -I asked if it wa freshly made today .It was was so overcooked and dry .A few (3 )shrimp were so over cooked that the shell was impossible to remove. No chicken present in rice mixture. Also, the small amount of sausage that was dice size was minimal.Salad that was one of the choice sides was adequate.Husbands scallops (4) were wrapped in bacon that was raw.He peeled the bacon away. Both meals should have been sent back .In a better quality restaurant we would have.WE left our dinners and will never return. Rated 1 out of 5 by Overly pricy for the quality of food. The food was severely under seasoned; there was literally only salt. Our party had 9 people so our server explained to us that there were only 2 boilers for the seafood boils, which 8 of us ordered. So for the sake of time and getting everyone's food out at the same time, they cooked everyone's selection together. The problem with that was that everyone's food selection was literally mixed together in two large bowls and we had to sift through all the seafood to get the right types of crab legs to the right person. The pasta was $20 for 2 muscles and 2 clams and very small shrimp. Not to mention, our server was clearly irritated that we asked for split checks. Maybe they shouldn't hand write their checks. Rated 3 out of 5 by The new owner has made a lot of changes over the past few years. Portion sizes were smaller, more expensive and we had to send our appetizer back. Very disappointing since we have gone for years and this place has been an Escondido gem that we always looked forward to treating ourselves to. Jun 6, 2015

Rated 4 out of 5 by The King Crab was very good...I was on a special diet and asked for something to be grilled and spiced up a bit and they were unable to help...i got very tiny shrimp on a bed of lettuce absolutly no flavor...they were very nice ...just no creativity. May 8, 2015

Rated 4 out of 5 by The food is a good value for what we got. And the dining experience kind of fits the venue very casual. We believe that attention to details, service and environment could be better, but it is certainly not too bad. Mar 23, 2015
Rated 2 out of 5 by Out of two items on menu we wanted: Mussels and Halibut. Overall somewhat slow getting food. Key lime pie was very.....small piece. Mar 20, 2015
