it is a very special place in a city 4/23/2013 8:11:17 AM
Apparently you have to buy a drink before you can go to the skylounge. The explanation of why isn't really clear, especially once you get up the stairs to see that there's a bar in the skylounge. The wait staff seemed aloof at best. The seating in the skylounge definitely needs to be refreshed. The linens were stained and had holes in them. The logos on some of the pillows were coming off and the tables looked clean but were sticky. I can understand why to an extent - this would be an awesome place to go on a weekend night when drinks get spilled and spiked heels end up in odd places...but I was there on a Tuesday night at the beginning of dinner service. The food was good, but not amazing. We started with calamari that was more chewy than it was crunchy and came with a sauce that provided less seasoning than a healthy dose of salt and pepper would have done. I had the short ribs with the "wasabi" mashed potatoes. The ribs were tasty enough, but not hot (in temperature) enough and the wasabi, if it was there, was the mildest wasabi I've ever experienced; which is hilarious because the waitress bothered to ask if I was okay with heat from wasabi. My friend had the Gourmet Cheeseburger, but we were left wondering exactly which part of it was gourmet. Again, not bad, but so many neighborhood, divey gastropubs offer better fare than this. Having said that, the fries that came with the burger were good - maybe that was the gourmet part? Overall, eating here was a lackluster experience. The tumbleweeds of culinary boredom and dusty winds of poor ambiance continue to play back in my mind leading me to dub this place Vango Unchained. If you want a somewhat cool view of center city Philly - go - otherwise, meh. 4/10/2013 10:15:31 AM
- food was ok - service was good - 20% service tip was added to the bill apriori 3/15/2013 10:27:40 PM
The food wasn't great I asked for my steak well done and it was still pink and not even hot, my beverage and my partner's tasted watery 3/15/2013 8:07:28 PM
Automatic 20% tip added to the bill even though only 2 of us eating, restaurant was empty and waitress was still on the slower side. 3/14/2013 10:11:02 PM
Forgot our appetizer, service was slow, not enough people on staff. 2/26/2013 4:18:18 PM
Diners avoid at all costs! The female manager acted like she had never taken a restaurant.com certificate before and thus made me feel unduly hassled and cheap for using it. Then they add a 20 percent tip to the total bill thus forcing me to reward this. The sushi was of convenience store quality which only added to the experience. If you don't mind watching a patron posing for a picture on the stripper pole while dining on a dirty couch and enjoy rude service 'professionals' then by all means come here! 2/15/2013 7:12:02 PM
Waitress was wonderfully attentive! 1/8/2013 10:02:07 AM
Although there weren't many people in the restaurant, the service was SLOW!!! Everything took forever to come out. When we asked for a drink refill it took 10 minutes each time. 12/7/2012 4:54:38 AM

Highlights

Two years ago, Dia Sawan started toying with the notion of a club like no other he'd ever seen.

The owner of Byblos along Philadelphia's formidable Rittenhouse Row whose family formed a dynasty of the area's best Mediterranean restaurants (Cedars, Fez) had already made his hookah lounge and restaurant a sensation before that trend commenced.

Why not try to strike lightening twice.

That's why two years later, there's Vango Lounge & Sky Bar at 116 S. 18th Street - the boldest of Philadelphia's restaurant lounges starring some of the best names in the food and DJ business.

If the address seems familiar to Sawan watchers, it should: his intimate Byblos is below Vango at the same address.

But from its massive oak doors and portal windows below to its dramatic roof deck view of the city above, no one will ever confuse the two.

That's just the start.

At somewhere around 8,000 square feet, Vango is as massive a space as it was an undertaking to get just the right custom made elements from around the world to fill the big rooms. "That's why it took so long," says Sawan. "Everything had to be unique. No. Everything is really and truly unique, personal even." Perhaps that's why Sawan decided to oversee the vision of Vango with help from several prominent designers.

Along the walls of its second floor walkup, there's over 200 carved out spaces into which is an illuminated vodka bottle. If that sounds strange, it's meant to. Says Sawan: "We put up the bottles. The vodka companies gave us the product."

Smart.

Smarter still is the crinkle-crushed-velvet along Vango's second-floor walls spectacularly speckled by a zillion inlaid lights. There's Nina Hazouri's plush custom-made and upholstered cushioned couches; set pieces tucked within private booths and below grand dramatic archways. "Everything is custom-made for Vango, says Sawan, pointing out even the littlest details.
