Highlights

Two years ago, Dia Sawan started toying with the notion of a club like no other he'd ever seen.

The owner of Byblos along Philadelphia's formidable Rittenhouse Row whose family formed a dynasty of the area's best Mediterranean restaurants (Cedars, Fez) had already made his hookah lounge and restaurant a sensation before that trend commenced.

Why not try to strike lightening twice.

That's why two years later, there's Vango Lounge & Sky Bar at 116 S. 18th Street - the boldest of Philadelphia's restaurant lounges starring some of the best names in the food and DJ business.

If the address seems familiar to Sawan watchers, it should: his intimate Byblos is below Vango at the same address.

But from its massive oak doors and portal windows below to its dramatic roof deck view of the city above, no one will ever confuse the two.

That's just the start.

At somewhere around 8,000 square feet, Vango is as massive a space as it was an undertaking to get just the right custom made elements from around the world to fill the big rooms. "That's why it took so long," says Sawan. "Everything had to be unique. No. Everything is really and truly unique, personal even." Perhaps that's why Sawan decided to oversee the vision of Vango with help from several prominent designers.

Along the walls of its second floor walkup, there's over 200 carved out spaces into which is an illuminated vodka bottle. If that sounds strange, it's meant to. Says Sawan: "We put up the bottles. The vodka companies gave us the product."

Smart.

Smarter still is the crinkle-crushed-velvet along Vango's second-floor walls spectacularly speckled by a zillion inlaid lights. There's Nina Hazouri's plush custom-made and upholstered cushioned couches; set pieces tucked within private booths and below grand dramatic archways. "Everything is custom-made for Vango, says Sawan, pointing out even the littlest details.

Rated 5 out of 5 by As many times as I have been in Vango I don't normally do more than appetizers, however I tried the braised short rib and wasabi potatoes and it was a pleasant surprise! It just took a little time to get my order placed because it was a party. Once I got waited on the server was very nice tended my needs well! Apr 3, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by A really modern space. I was having booking issues due to my schedule, but they were very accommodating. Feb 2, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Wish the menu was a little more varied or extensive Jan 9, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by The staff was awesome. We had a lot of out of towner's questions and they were so helpful. Food was good! Dec 13, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by The food at Vango was excellent and the service was good up until the end - - we had to wait a long time to get our dessert (perhaps because there was a birthday party being celebrated there which trumped our order?) Unfortunately the music was just too darn loud to really be able to relax and have a conversation while dining. Also the place was very dark and that, along with the pole dancing which was going on gave the place a little bit of an unsavory atmosphere - more of a clubbing, rather than dining atmosphere...However Vango's sky bar was closed and it might have been a much better atmosphere for dining up there, which would have been our first choice. Nonetheless, the food was excellent and I'd like to try the sky bar so I would definitely go again. Dec 10, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by I found the food to be OK... the atmosphere a little bizarre for my tastes (there were pole dancers at one point) but the highlight of the evening was talking with Vera, our waitress, who is a delight! Nov 27, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by We were early and the only diners. Clearly it's more of a bar (with upscale food) - great decor. Music was more appropriate for a bar than a dinner restaurant. Oct 31, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by server was very quick and accomodating. Oct 28, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by The rooftop deck was lovely. Oct 16, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by The restaurant was EMPTY. It was us and one other couple. But somehow we still waited 10 minutes to place our drink orders. The food was just not good. They sell sushi at premium prices, and we expected to get premium sushi. We were wrong! Our $15 rainbow roll had mushy avocado inside of it. And the fish was still mostly frozen. The parts of the fish that were not frozen were a gross freezer-burnt type of mushy texture. I could have gotten better food at Wegmans for less than 1/4 the price we paid here.If I had not had the $25 restaurants.com coupon, I would have made some major complaints to the manager. I still feel that the $35 I put on my card above the voucher was more than my meal was worth. I will not return and I will advise everyone I know to do the same. Oct 10, 2013
